Finding New Children who are in Need

Home Visits of Currently Sponsoring Children

Background and Objectives:

In India, children are granted free education up to the second year of secondary school. However, there are no subsidies for the students' books, stationery and other costs which are essential for their education. Many of the grass-roots families, due to these additional costs, choose not to let their children go to school.

Impact for Peace initiated the Children Sponsorship Program in 2009 in collaboration with our partnering organization FOCUS to allow more children in the slum areas of Kolkata to go to school, and in effect to improve the quality of lives of the people living in the slums. We believe if children are able to go to school they will be educated and hence be empowered to change their lives in the future. Donors from Hong Kong will sponsor the children to go to school for two years. Up to now, there are about 60 students who are benefiting from this program and we are expecting 50 more in the next year.

What do we actually do in Kolkata?

Children Sponsorship Program

As mentioned above, after visiting the children in the slum areas who are currently under the sponsorship program we then share their most updated situations with their donors so that the donors are more involved in the program. We also encourage the donors to write letters to them after knowing more about the children they are sponsoring

We are now in search of new donors from our friend groups and the teaching staff of HKU. In the near future, we are searching for donors and sponsorships from business corporations and Indian restaurants in  Hong Kong.

Continuous Involvement in Hong Kong

When we travelled to Kolkata, we visited all the families of children whom we are sponsoring to understand from the FOCUS staff and the family members how exactly the money is used to support them to go to school. We then transfer this information back to the Hong Kong so that they will understand their situation more.

FOCUS staff also brought us to the slum areas to find children who are eligible for our sponsorship program. In year 2012, we recruited around 40 more children into our program and is now finding kind-hearted donors in Hong Kong who are willing to sponsor them.
